  3. My favorite winter activity that I do in my class is when we have a field trip (walk) to the local St. Vincent de Paul (thrift store) and the kiddos get to purchase 2 gifts for special people for only a buck! Then, we come back to the classroom and wrap the gifts and have a holiday party! So much fun and we do it as a whole school! <3 Can't wait for this year's!

  5. I love making gingerbread houses with graham crackers...then they use gummi bears to create "Christmas without GOldlocks". They turn out quite funny. Some of them are sad she is gone and some of them are still angry about the mess she made....doesn't really matter, everyone gets eaten after lunch anyway!

  14. Favorite Winter Activity:
I do a winter acrostic poem and attach it to our "tear art" snowmen. Such a great fine motor activity to tear all of the scrap construction paper they get out of "Herman" (he's our scrap box) to make a snowman with his hat, scarf, buttons, etc. I have them tear the pieces really teeny tiny (sorry, Kristin - no offense) so they end up looking so awesome. I'm always suprised by their stick-to-it-ive-ness (like that word?!?). I plan on doing it this week (or next) and will post on my blog :)

  17. Hmmmm. My favorite winter activity with the kiddos is probably when we have our pajama read-athon. The kids bring their sleeping bags, favorite stuffed animal, and then we have ourselves an entire day of reading! I put out lots of Christmas books for them to pick from and we read..read.. and then we read some more. Kids love it and so do I! Makes my heart smile to see them read! Oh yes...the next day we watch the Polar Express and have cookies and hot cocoa. Fun!

  33. My favorite winter activity is actually done by our whole school. On the last day before Christmas break we have a pajama day. Everyone wears their pajamas (I even pull out my awfully dreadful christmas pjs) and we watch the Polar Express! We drink hot chocolate, have candy canes, and popcorn! The kids love it and it's perfect for the last day before break when everyone is crazy anyway! I even ran an IEP meeting in my PJs last year! haha

  45. 3. A winter activity that I like to do with my students that is super easy and 'oh-so cute' is to have each student bring in an empty soda can. Each student glues googly eyes on the top of the can. Use scrap fabric to as a scarf and wrap around the top of the can up by the rim. Glue 2 pom-poms on each side of the can close to the top of the rim for earmuffs. I display these out in the hallway and call them "Soda Can Carolers." The opening of the can looks like a mouth that is open and singing. The kids think they are so funny. Thanks for this great giveaway!

  54. This is my first year with my own classroom, but right now I am in the middle of a Nutcracker mini-unit. We have read a Nutcracker book and are starting going through the book a second time to master 'summarizing' with writing. We are watching a video of The Nutcracker (can't think of the ballet co. off the top of my head), for each part we summarized, then we will compare/contrast our book to the ballet movie once we finish it! Tomorrow we're going on a 'behind the scenes' field trip of a local ballet production of The Nutcracker. If you can't tell, I love the story of The Nutcracker! :) ~Heidi V.

  60. What's winter without snow? Since we live in Florida and many of my students have never seen snow, a few years ago, I bought the instant snow powder and made some of my own. Every year on the day the students return from Christmas vacation, they discover that it has "snowed" in our classroom. I make a whole bunch of it and just throw it everywhere (tables, counters, cubbies, floor)! If you've never tried it, it's great! The best part is, by the end of the day is has "melted" (turned back into powder form) and you can either brush it back into the container to use again or just sweep it up.

  61. My fav activity for my kiddos to do is make holiday cards. They use green, red, or blue construction paper with a snowman cutout on the front. Then they use q-tips to fill in the snowman outline with white paint dabs - so cute! They add details with markers and craft sequins. I hang them around the doorway, and they get compliments every year.

  66. One of my favorite winter activities I do with my students is creating our Christmas tree out of the children's traced hands. Kids trace their hands 2 times (lots of hands needed!) and I assemble a big Christmas tree on a bulletin board in the classroom. Then the kids write what their Christmas wish is on some snowflakes that I place around the tree. I have found that the tree looks better when the kids can use all different color papers...it kind of looks like Christmas lights!

Then I print black and white pictures of the kids on the laser printer at school, I give the kids some brown paper to make antlers, and I put a drop of glue and red glitter on their nose. They turn out adorable every year.
